Lib Dems stop yet another example of the Tories loading the dice in their favour

In a night of heavy voting (and heavier Government defeats) the Government lost a vote in the Lords 320 - 172 on an amendment to the Trade Union Bill which introduced a fairer system for reforming trade union party funding.

Following the vote, Paul Tyler, Liberal Democrat Constitutional Affairs Spokesperson, said:

"We have stopped yet another example of the Tories loading the dice in their favour. They are aggressively cementing their hold on power, making every change they can to ensure that we have a Tory government for decades to come.

"This is a small change which makes a big difference to the Tory plot to fix the system. Slowing the speed of these sweeping changes makes the Tory attempt at party funding reform far less one sided.

"This is a victory in the ongoing attempts to ensure that the Tories see sense. This remains the best chance for fair reform of party funding in this Parliament. We must repair the system to give the public what they want - a democracy that represents them."
